LDPE Match Cycle Results in Record Number of Matches

On October 22nd, 2012, the LDPE Registry posted the results of its 14th scheduled match cycle. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of all Canadian transplant programs, the HLA labs and the CBS Registries team, this match cycle resulted in the participation of 145 registered pairs and 11 NDADs (non-directed anonymous donors)!

Accreditation Canada has new standards for organ and tissue donation and transplant (OTDT).

Created with the input of a diverse group of health care professionals and organizations from across the country, the standards were developed for health professionals working in a variety of organizations. The standards cover the full continuum, from donor identification through to transplant and follow-up care.

Leah Hollins: Canada needs an integrated national organ donation system

The debate about presumed consent for organ donations (“The case against ‘opt-out’ organ donation,” Marni Soupcoff, Sept. 27) is one that has polarized the country. A decade ago, Canadians were evenly split on the issue, but that divide in public opinion is turning into majority support for the practice.

Organ donation’s “silver bullet”?

Testing presumed consent for organ donation in a province or region where residents support the notion could help resolve the debate over whether a national “opt-out” system would improve Canada’s chronic organ shortage, an expert says. “From a national point of view, because consent to organ and tissue donation laws are provincially based, we would welcome having a province take a lead on this to demonstrate whether it is effective,” says Dr. Sam Shemie, medical director for organs and tissues donation at Canadian Blood Services (CBS) and a pediatric intensive care physician in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care at Montreal Children’s Hospital in Quebec.

Facebook reveals organ donor tool online

Facebook doesn’t get much more personal than this: with just a few clicks, a new feature lets you tell your friends that you’re ready to donate your organs. Facebook users in the U.S. have been using the organ donation tool since May, and Canadians started this week.
